Mrs Lyndon B Johnson is cited for two minor traffic offenses after a two car collision in Austin Texas. Police say she failed to yield right of way and did not display a driver's license to a Secret Service escort. No injuries were reported and damage totals are given. The accident happened near the home of her daughter Mrs Patrick Nugent.
President Nixon unveiled a wall display of family pictures in his secluded office across from the White House. He and Henry Cabot Lodge, named representative to the Vatican, posed with the photos for reporters revealing Tricia Nixon was a brunette as a child.
In Vietnam, Capt. Vincent N. Hartmann and 1st Lt. Robert G. Lee Jr. face upgraded counts of premeditated murder of a Vietnamese woman and a man, adding to previous attempted murder charges tied to an incident around June 15, 1969, in the Delta region.
Col. L. Gordon Cooper, one of the original Mercury astronauts, will resign from NASA July 31 to become president of National Exhibits Inc in Washington with an engineering consultant role for Intersales Ltd. His departure leaves Capt. Alan Shepard and Donald K. Slayton as the remaining Mercury members in the program. Shepard is slated to command Apollo 14 on December 3.
The market started the day weaker with about three advances for every one decline on the New York Stock Exchange. Key issues showed fractional moves as Telex rose, Texaco fell, Standard Oil slumped, Kennecott and Gulf Oil declined, and Anaconda dropped. The Dow Jones average fell 18 points to 689.11, down 2.51 percent.
Alfred Avins, a New York lawyer, filed papers in U.S. District Court in Washington challenging the law lowering the voting age to 18. He argues the measure erodes his clients votes and conflicts with New York's 21 age requirement and the removal of residence rules and literacy tests until 1975.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis children John and Caroline arrive in Greece for a summer vacation aboard a Seaplane flown by Aristotle Onassis. The family is greeted by Onassis as they reach the private island of Scorpios in the Ionian Sea, about 250 miles off the Greek coast.
Secretary Maurice H. Stans and Kiichi Miyazawa met in Washington for the third round of talks on a Japanese textile import agreement. The 70 minute session Tuesday yielded no statement on progress.
USC solicitor John W. Foard Jr. says a legislative probe will be assigned to investigate the university and push for President Thomas F. Jones’s resignation this summer. He vows a Richland County Grand Jury review if the campus is not cleaned up by autumn, and seeks tighter hiring and admission screening along with clear on campus enforcement guidelines.
Kimberly-Clark Corp announces a 100000 square foot expansion at its Beech Island consumer products plant with startup planned by April 1, 1971. The project adds non woven fabric machines for disposable lab coats sheets and hospital packs while a separate offline printer boosts tissue product capacity. The plant serves the Southeastern market and sits near the Georgia border.
In Columbia 72 year old Rep. John L. McMillan won the Democratic renomination in a runoff, defeating Claud Stephens 45,918 to 18,633. McMillan, veteran of the South Carolina delegation, carried a strong majority across all 195 precincts in the 6th District, with turnout about 12 percent higher than the June 9 primary. The district covers nine northeastern counties. Stephens, a Kingstree physician, was the runoff challenger following a close first primary.
Cambodian military spokesman says American jet bombers attacked deep into Cambodia in support of Cambodian troops. Eyewitness accounts report OV10 marking targets for South Vietnamese jets. The strikes aided in breaking the siege of Kompong Thom as U S pilots reportedly operated up to 100 miles inside Cambodia.
A free noon event Sunday July 5 at Hamburg Railroad depot kicks off Aiken County Tricentennial Week with a transit exhibition on Southern Railway history. Highlights include The Best Friend replica rides, railway society displays, a costume contest, beauty queen appearances, dignitary speeches, plaque unveilings, and sound slide presentations detailing past to present rail development.
G C Garvin of Wagener won the Democratic nomination for Commissioner District 3 in a runoff, defeating Norton Heyward 689 to 389. He is unopposed in November. Garvin, a 26 year veteran heavy equipment operator, worked under retiring District 3 Commissioner C T Whetstone. In a magistrate’s race Districts 10 and 17, Jack Patterson defeated Hubert Addie 516 to 412.
