In a carefully staged demonstration prosecutors had Simpson try on gloves matching those found outside his mansion and near the bodies of his ex wife and her friend. The gloves slipped on this time but analysts say the key mistake from the prior attempt remains a problem for the case.
A nine year old boy Bryan Nance lost his wallet containing a $100 bill on a Myrtle Beach beach trip. An honest finder turned in the wallet at a Wal-Mart store, returning money and lesson to the grateful boy and his mother.
An explosion and fire hit Dalton Foundries Inc in Warsaw at dawn injuring at least 18 people including several with critical burns. The cause is undetermined and all employees present were accounted for. Linda Olinger, nursing supervisor at Kosciusko Community Hospital, cited many with third degree burns.

Mayor Fred Cavanaugh expressed doubt Wednesday that a proposed ordinance to require underground utility service lines is needed. City officials and four utilities including South Carolina Electric and Gas Co and Southern Bell discussed safety, beautification, and costs of replacing aboveground lines, with concerns over consumer charges and logistical hurdles.
This year’s Ai ken County peach crop is good but not as fruitful as early forecasts. National Peach Council president Lewis Holmes cites dry conditions from March through early month as the main reason for lower volume, though he notes high quality. He irrigated orchards in spring and says peaches are smaller but well textured, colored, and flavorful. Roadside stands report reasonable prices for solid fruit.
Aiken County saw unemployment rise sharply in May from 5.3 percent in April to 82 percent as 4,900 residents filed for benefits. The jobless rate marks the worst level since March 1994, with 4,900 jobless out of a 63,000 workforce. Savannah River Site layoff waves and 4,200 DOE job cuts drive the surge.
Jim Dangerfield new chairman of the Economic Development Partnership tells Sunrise Rotary Club that Aiken and Edgefield counties will weather Savannah River Site job cuts. He notes the local economy remains solid, with effects unlikely to be felt for months as the partnership works with SRS on privatization of functions.
The remaining losses are attributed to layoffs as South Carolina keeps the May jobless rate at 4.9 percent. Analysts cite ongoing sector adjustments and hiring slowdowns as the cause for continued unemployment stability.
