Wallace Drummings, 51, of Aiken drowned on a fishing trip in Edgefield County. Edgefield County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Natural Resources recovered his body Thursday around 10 am. The drowning will be ruled accidental, Deputy Coroner David Burnett said.

William Ernest Downs, 35, accused of the April 1999 strangulation death of six year old Keenan O Mailin in North Augusta, faced a death penalty after a guilt phase plea. Forensic experts described Downs as a pedophile shaped by troubled childhood as part of the mental state review. The judge will decide at the punishment phase with a ruling likely before Monday.

Absentee ballots for the Tuesday Republican Party runoff will be accepted at the Aiken County Registration and Elections office on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Ballots can be cast at the office until 5 p.m. Monday. Saturday is the last day to register to vote for the July 23 Aiken County Council Republican primary for Districts 2, 5 and 6. For details call 642-2028. The office is at 916 Vaucluse Road.
The group behind Sunday alcohol sales in Aiken has about 1,100 of the 2,000 signatures needed. Sam Erb of the Aiken Hospitality Group says a voter registration drive will be held today from noon to 6 pm in front of Lionel Smith Ltd on Laurens Street to boost participation. The effort began June 13 with 500 of the 1,882 signatures collected, and organizers aim for 2,000 since some signers may live outside the city limits. The deadline to submit signatures to the South Carolina Election Commission to qualify for the November ballot is noted on Page 7A.
