Poisoning Boll Weevil Early for Cotton Yields
Tests at the Pea Do Experiment Station show that proper sweetened poison and dust applications can yield 25 per acre and 6 per acre respectively. The state has a rare weevil population in cotton, making early control crucial. Prepare sweetened poison by mixing calcium arsenate, water, and molasses, applying within hours of mixing. Dust may be used with equipment or a sack, limiting to 20 3 pounds per acre to avoid plant damage. Calcium arsenate dust should be used when 10 percent of squares are punctured. Read Extension Bulletin 95 for full control details. John Howard McLean attended a Blue Ridge conference as a Furman representative.
