American Medical Association figures show severe overcrowding in insane asylums and general hospitals. In 1920 general hospitals averaged 259,802 patients while nervous and mental institutions held 365,035. By 1928 nervous and mental institutions rose far faster, with infection rates and costs estimated at about $200 per year per family.
