Circuit court judge approved a Schmercher motion ordering 19 year old Stephen Morrell Carter to provide a mouth swab for DNA testing. Carter faces charges of murdering Master Public Safety Officer Scotty Richardson and wounding Officer Travis Griffin after a Dec. 20 traffic stop gunfight. Authorities link DNA to a 38 caliber Rossi revolver and other guns found in the vehicle. Assistant solicitor David Miller said swab is least intrusive reliable method with probable cause to test for or against Carter.
Governor Nikki Haley and representatives from Hostec International SCE&G and Areva gather at the Statehouse for an 11 30 a m press conference on deploying small modular reactor SMR technology at SRS. The event outlines potential state job growth manufacturing leadership and a $900 million five year DOE funded cost share. NuScale Power LLC and NuHub also announced April plans to pursue an SMR at SRS.
Aiken County Council will consider the final reading of the 2013 fiscal year budget totaling 52.2 million dollars. The plan omits raises and additional staff and equipment while noting no tax increase is expected amid fluctuating state funding. County Administrator Clay Killian says increases from the Local Government Fund could add 300 000 to 400 000, with potential uses including equipment and employee raises. Sheriff Michael Hunt has requested nine more deputies.
