Greenwood County authorities seek to identify a newborn found buried in a shallow grave near US 25. Sarah Frances Quarles faces unlawful removal of a body and destruction of a deceased human being charges. Autopsy results awaited to determine if the infant was born alive. Investigators say death likely occurred May 29 with burial a few days later.

Baldwin dies in Alabama electric chair after long wait for justice
In Atmore Alabama Brian Keith Baldwin 40 Charlotte North Carolina was executed for the 1977 abduction torture and hatchet killing of Naomi Rolon a 16 year old from Hudson North Carolina. Prosecutors said he and Edward Horsley abducted Rolon after escaping a North Carolina prison camp. Horsley was executed in 1996. The victim’s family expressed no solace and questioned racial bias claims while Baldwin’s supporters argued injustice. The execution began after delays and Baldwin’s last words and actions showed mixed emotions as witnesses reflected on the lengthy case.
