County approves 4.2 mill tax hike in Aiken

Aiken County Council voted a 4.2 mill increase Tuesday night the first general operations raise in 12 years to fund services and vehicles. Members Scott Singer Eddie Butler Lawana McKenzie Rick Osbon supported the plan with opposition from Chuck Smith Kathy Rawls and Charles Barto n Willar Hightower was absent.

Storm cripples tower. sheriff’s office adapts operations

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office operates from a state emergency mobile command post after Monday's severe lightning strikes damaged a communications tower. State officials including Buddy Jordan of the Budget and Control Board and John Smigelski of Emergency Management assess recovery and coordination efforts.

Mobile command post aids sheriff with fire communications

A storm knocked out phones and downed trees, prompting a large mobile command post from Columbia to assist the sheriff's office. The unit, resembling a tour bus, now transmits fire calls to outlying volunteer departments to county fire stations.

Mobile command unit aids EMS dispatch after storms

An estimated five year old mobile unit first used in 1998 Edgefield tornados aided Monday storm response as routine EMS transmissions briefly failed and were rerouted through the mobile command. Chief Deputy Dwayne Courtney notes dispatch from inside the office while calls go via a patched line to the unit near the sheriff's building.

Couple killed in crash known as fine citizens

Ed and Leslie Johnson described as energetic and compassionate. He was a pilot and airport official. she worked in special education at North Augusta Elementary. The couple helped run High Flight Cafe near the airport. Mrs Johnson joined a flight to take a plane for maintenance when a mechanical issue caused a crash in a marsh.

Artist brightens days for sick kids at MCG Healing Arts program

Elizabeth Barnes, an artist in residence from North Augusta, joins five others in the Healing Arts team at the Medical College of Georgia. The group, three visual artists and three musicians, brings color and creativity to hospital patients, helping ease pain and lift spirits during illness and injury. The program began in November and offers diverse art experiences for children from kindergarten through high school.
