A Palestinian man detonated nail-studded explosives on a Jerusalem bus crowded with students and workers, killing himself and 19 passengers and wounding 55. The attack marked the city’s deadliest suicide bombing in six years as President Bush prepared a major Mideast policy statement.

Monsignor Thomas Evatt a 52 year old priest from Aiken’s St Mary Help of Christians is bound over for trial on one count of lewd act on a minor alleged to have occurred between June 1976 and June 1977 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Charleston. The accuser now 34 reported the incident to his father in 1991 and Evatt remains free on bonds with counseling ordered and church authorities suspending him.
Federal Judge Cameron Currie scheduled a hearing at 11 a.m. to rule whether the Department of Energy can ship plutonium to the Savannah River Site, a decision that could block Gov Hodges efforts to stop shipments. Currie previously found no federal environmental law bans shipments and rejected a request for an injunction, while Hodges announced an emergency and blockade action. Energy Dept said shipments would be delayed until June 22.
Gov Hodges and the U S Department of Energy are at odds over plutonium shipments to the Savannah River Site. Dr Ralph Disibio of Washington Group International warns that federal funding for SRP projects could suffer if Hodges continues to block shipments. He predicts plutonium will come from Colorado and other places despite the dispute.
A recount in the Third Congressional race shows Barrett winning the runoff spot with 27,529 votes while Klauber tallies 13,868 and Dunworth 13,842. The State Election Commission certified district results after a close six way race on June 11, projecting a Barrett versus Klauber run-off.

Four groups of 12 to 14 year olds joined a week long Fire Cadet Camp run by Aiken and North Augusta Public Safety on the first day focusing on hose handling fire trucks and basic firefighting gear. Sgt David Turne said the camp, free and sponsored by the South Carolina State Firemen Association, began as an overnight program in Camp Long in 1998 and now runs as a day camp with future lessons in first aid CPR rescue and hazardous materials training by partner agencies.
