PSA Declared Non-Existent by South Carolina Supreme Court

The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled the Aiken County Public Service Authority invalid and unconstitutional, saying the PSA had no authority to call the 1974 referendum. The court requires a new referendum sponsored by the county before moving forward with any wastewater facility plan.

Gasoline supplies seen adequate for summer travel

Turnipseed Wins South Carolina Senate Primary Challenge Rejected

The South Carolina Democratic Party Executive Committee upheld Tom Turnipseed's June 8 Senate District 8 victory over F W Caughman by 119 votes. Caughman had claimed voter irregularities centering on Bamberg County absentee ballots but the panel found the allegations unsubstantiated and Caughman withdrew his protest. The district includes Aiken Lexington Barnwell Bamberg and Edgefield counties.

Flooding damages Fulford offices as heavy rains hit Aiken

Yesterday's downpours flooded Aiken streets and caused two minor electrical fires controlled by Public Safety. Water from a broken drain backed into Dr. Michael D. Fulford's Laurens Street offices, soaking the reception room and fixtures. Fire crews pumped out water from indoors and rooftops.

The U S Embassy in Beirut strongly urged Americans to depart Lebanon after the assassination of the U S ambassador and economic counselor. Aiken County General Sessions Court will hear the state versus Cleo J. Scott on a one week term. Scott, former county clerk of court and registrar of mesne conveyance, remains free on a $10,000 bond as she faces embezzlement charges totaling about 2,734 dollars for periods in 1974 and 1975.

Commissioners Clash Over Budget Charges With Kirby

Aiken County commissioners dispute Forest L. Kirby’s claim that items were run into the budget. They back final reading of the budget though they disagree on several items. An executive session discussed raising salaries by 1000 and ending mileage reimbursement of 1200 with a voucher system approved by unanimous vote. Kirby said he will attend a Florida national conference as a delegate for the Lower Savannah Regional Council of Governments.

Cullinan Denies Misquotation on Salary Increases

Commissioner Ralph F. Cullinan, in a runoff with R. T. Hunto, says he was misquoted in yesterday’s Aiken Standard about commissioner salaries. He supported most of the budget but opposed the raises, and backed expense account reform. Other officials urged keeping county business first and questioning actions toward Lower Savannah.

New Comic Joins Aiken Standard Lineup

The Aiken Standard will feature a new children oriented comic titled The Write Answers joining the weekday strip lineup. Cartoonist Ed Stanoszek created the interactive feature inviting readers to write punch lines, appealing to young readers and even prompting adults to join in.
