King Hussein of Jordan arrives in Moscow to shop for antiaircraft missiles under 850 million. He confirms talks on adding Soviet air defense batteries to Jordan's Western armed forces and says he will act to defend Jordan from any source. He denies knowledge of U S aid threats over the purchase.
Navy says a limited inquiry found Jacque Srouji was assigned to review unclassified pamphlets and briefing materials for public inquiries about the Navy Seafarer program while on active duty in Washington. A source in the case presents two documents that contradict the Navy’s account.
Rioting raged for a second day in Soweto as students stoned cars and battled police. Three more people died, raising the toll to 26, with 220 injured and 126 arrested. Air force helicopters dropped tear gas while over 1,000 police patrolled in armored cars.

Eddie Lieberman of Greenville Ken Hill of Gaffney named to Brotherhood Commission. Vivian H Andrews of Georgetown named to Denominational Calendar Committee.
A fire on the second floor of Shenandoah Homes aged care facility in Roanoke sent smoke through the six story building early today. Four people died and 24 were injured according to a hospital spokesman. About 100 residents were evacuated, exact patient count not known.
The Rocky Mountain spotted fever, spread by ticks, has killed two people in North Carolina this year. The state reports 24 cases, per the Communicable Disease Control Branch of the Division of Health led by Dr. J N MaccCormick.
