Senate panel eases Clinton nuclear waste stance
The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee moved toward a compromise on commercial nuclear waste by approving a bill that would keep waste at reactor sites in 34 states with the federal government taking title. The plan, supported by all Republicans on the panel, shifts away from a Nevada interim storage site and would place custody with the government until Yucca Mountain permits are issued, potentially by 2007, while allowing EPA or NRC to set radiation standards.

DOE names security czar seenrrated
Energy Secretary Bill Richardson named retired Air Force Gen Eugene Habiger as security czar over the nuclear weapons program and labs. Habiger will start July 6 and report to the energy secretary with authority to rebuild the department security and cybersecurity apparatus. A two day security stand down will be ordered at Los Alamos Livermore and Sandia to review security.
