Edisto Island Shell Heap Aims At Protection Wall
Officials seek an environmental permit to build a 100 foot long retaining wall nearly seven feet high to shield a creekside shell mound at Edisto Beach State Park. The 60 by eight inch tall pile, possibly 4500 years old, may hold artifacts from tribal life and is eroding toward Scott's Creek. Archaeologist Chester DePratter notes decades of Native American site study.

Tourism Center Aims to Focus National Tourism Efforts
Joel Smith of the Moore School of Business says the new center will rally national attention on tourism, a need highlighted since 9 11 2001. Gov Mark Sanford signs the Fiscal Discipline Act of 2004 to curb state spending using 50 million from the General Reserve Fund to offset a 155 million deficit. The act follows 89 million in current year budget reductions with 16 million to be covered from the Capital Reserve Fund next year. A replica 17th century trading vessel the Adventure sank at Charles Towne Landing while docked, a longtime tourist draw built in 1970 for the tricentennial celebration.
