COLUMBIA AP The head of the State Employees Association calls Gov Dick Riley s veto of all state worker pay raises bitterly disappointed Larry Ellis says the union will fight back Riley seeks to close a 52 million shortfall in the 1982 83 budget by trimming costs for state workers including 5 percent cost of living raises 2 percent merit and longevity raises and 2 percent retiree and teacher bonuses If approved by the General Assembly no state pay raises would occur across agencies including judges and Riley himself except for a few constitutional officers who hadn t had a raise in three years The package would also cut 5 9 million from the Education Finance Act with a proposed reduction to teacher salary hikes.
