Boosters of the Aiken Downtown Development Association held an early Flag Day celebration on Newberry Street. Watermelon seeds, a fire hose, and a hot dog stand drew families for four hours of activities including seed-spitting contests won by Nicole Caniglia and Janet Kirkland. The public safety ladder truck sprayed cooling water, while the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals sold tickets and pet-care items.
