Broder Joins Aiken Standard as New Opinions Columnist

The Aiken Standard adds David S. Broder Pulitzer Prize winner from the Washington Post as a regular Opinions page columnist. Broder earned the 1973 Pulitzer for distinguished commentary and was rated Washington’s most highly regarded columnist in 1981 by editors and members of Congress.

City OKs Budget and Maintains Tax Rate in Aiken

The Aiken City Council approved a 9.37 million dollar budget for 1983 84 with no tax increase and a millage rate of 107. The plan includes revenue sharing funds and a July 1 start. Mayor Weeks was authorized to accept a 510 427 FAA grant to rehabilitate runway 6 24 at Aiken Municipal Airport and an Airport Advisory Committee was formed with members from FMC Corp Graniteville Co Du Pont and Savannah River Plant.

Judge Closes P J s Lounge in Gloverville

Judge Rodney A. Peeples ordered P J s Lounge closed as a common nuisance after a hearing in Aiken County General Sessions Court. The sheriff padlocked the site citing fights, illegal beer sales, Sunday sales violations, vandalism, and two killings in the last month.

Five Alarm Fire Destroys Ramada Inn Central Fort Worth

A five alarm blaze engulfed the Ramada Inn Central in Fort Worth early today forcing guests to jump from windows. Four people died and 29 were injured, with flames reaching 20 feet high and the fire still out of control at 6 a.m. Heavy rain hampered firefighting as authorities counted victims and set up aid at a nearby bank and Red Cross shelter.

Milledge Clyatt Laments Law Day Patrol Presence

Milledge Clyatt complained at a Law Day dinner that the South Carolina Highway Patrol is needed only rarely. SCE&G Seeks $11.4 Million Gas Rate Hike in SC

SCE&G filed with the Public Service Commission for an $11.4 million natural gas rate increase. The 9.3 percent rise would boost the average residential bill by about $8 monthly, affecting about 160,000 customers. The PSC has until September to rule.
