The House approved a 1.99 billion military construction appropriation 308 to 57, sending the measure to the Senate. It includes 365.8 million for Safeguard antimissile development and housing, while Rep. Sidney R. Yates failed to strip most Safeguard funds 98 to 26.
An explosion in Omaha blew a four foot square hole in the police building wall and shattered windows in the building and in a bus outside. No injuries were reported. The device, likely dynamite, was placed in a first floor window well. The blast hit during a shift change with eleven officers inside.
Former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey announces his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota. He plans a news conference at his Waverly lakeside home and seeks party endorsement at the June convention to face Republican Clark MacGregor in November.
Stocks opened lower in moderate trading as losers outpaced gainers. Major declines included Memorex down 1 percent to 77, Eastman Kodak off to 62, Pfizer down 31, RCA down to 21, Texaco at 2642, and Gulf Oil slipping 4 to 23.
The Senate Armed Services Committee backed a 200 million contingency fund requested for Lockheed Aircraft Corp during the C5 super transport program. The vote total was not disclosed and an amendment to strike the 200 million was rejected.
Invitations signed by leaders from both parties go to mayors of the 108 largest cities inviting them to a July 4 Honor America Day at the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event, sponsored by Bob Hope and Billy Graham, is pitched as nonpartisan amid criticism it favors the Nixon administration.
In East New York Brooklyn sporadic disturbances followed trash fires early today. A police car was fire bombed windows broken and some stores looted. A sniper report proved false no serious injuries. Police arrested 11 people.
Nine year old Robert M. Knight samples peaches at Louis Jackson's Rutland Drive orchard as excellent late-season fruit leads to rising prices. The Ridge Area harvest, hampered by the March freeze, aims for 50 to 60 percent of last year with Coronet Red Haven and other varieties ripening from June into August. Blue Goose Growers Inc reports 25 local growers supplying top fruit to major markets with light shipments this week and a surge expected next month.
Tornadoes from severe thunderstorms swept the Great Plains striking more than a dozen towns in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Two deaths reported one in each state, with additional fatalities in Oklahoma. Arkansas reports 25 injured and Oklahoma 12. Nineteen mobile homes were demolished in Alta Vista and Long Town near Tulsa. A teenage girl died in Alta Vista. Springdale, Arkansas suffered the worst impact. National Guardsmen were called to aid searches for the injured.
The Cambodian government, under pressure from Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces, agrees to give up nearly half the country to Communist control. Western experts call the move hardheaded and realistic as monsoon weather threatens survival of Lon Nol's regime.
The Aiken Chamber of Commerce was urged to involve leaders and recruit key figures to tackle local problems. Jack Rogers of the Anderson Greater Chamber outlined a plan: assess community needs, mobilize professionals, execute actions, and report results after a period. Anderson runs a five year Total Community Development program.
South Carolina Governor Robert McNair said a fact finding trip to Southeast Asia convinced him that U S troop movements in Cambodia achieved military success and produced several good side effects. He noted captured weapons ammunition and food could supply an army of 20 000 for a year and called his visit cautiously optimistic.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine said it freed 58 Americans Britons and other foreigners held in Amman two major hotels after more than 36 hours of captivity diplomats in Beirut said contact with Amman was still cut and the widow of Maj Robert P Perry an American attache killed during the raid was reported among those freed.
Aiken allies launch Honor Season on Flag Day June 14 with support from the Retired Officers Association Henry Middleton DAR Veterans groups Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce and local firms. The period expands to July 12 to include Tri Centenn ial Participation Week. Col Laurence Varner comments on broad community backing.

Lucien Dutch Hockman of North Augusta, a 28 year Army veteran, will become Aiken County Service Officer on June 15 replacing James Hamilton. Hockman served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, earning the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star among other awards, and is a member of American Legion Post 71.
