Retired Teacher Dies In Mugging
In Greenwich Village a 61 year old former teacher, Robert Byron, was beaten and killed after refusing a handout to a teenage runaway from Florida. A 230 pound man struck him with a stick and he fell down a stone stairway, dying of head injuries. The 14 year old girl from St Augustine led two youths who attacked Byron after planning to panhandle with her. Police followed three men who intervened as Byron headed home to the Albert Hotel on University Place.
