The Senate, by 51 to 27, approved a $2.7 billion servicemen pay raise, adding $1.7 billion via an Allott amendment after rejecting Nixon administration plans. Recruits would receive $301.50 monthly, up from $268.50 in the House version and $201.90 under the administration proposal.
Army reports 24 year old West Point graduate 1st Lt. John R Vequist of Pittsburgh Kan has been AWOL since May 20 and is believed possibly with his wife in Sweden after reportedly fleeing to Vietnam with an estimated 245 other soldiers in Germany. The Army may classify him as a deserter if he remains missing past 30 days.
Whitney K. Lever, information officer, said a fire that burned over 10 000 acres in Superior National Forest north of Ely may have been beneficial. He noted much of the area should have burned under control before reseeding and that bug worms had killed much of the balsam. Federal crews had been burning to prepare seedbeds when the blaze, near Ely, escaped control on April 26.
Singer Dick Haymes facing a Kingston Surrey court on a 1966 loan petition cannot attend a hearing due to a Madrid engagement and lack of funds for travel. Barbara Ann Preminger, 26, sues Erik Preminger, 26, in Manhattan Supreme Court for divorce after four years of marriage. She alleges cruel treatment and seeks alimony, home, joint custody of their 3 year old Christopher, and child support. Erik was adopted by Otto Preminger after paternity was revealed posthumously.
Dr. Benjamin Spock arrived in Sydney for a three week lecture tour to speak against the Vietnam War and address antiwar sentiment. He was welcomed by local critics and supporters alike as he prepared to tour major Australian cities.

In Cambodia intense combat raged around Vihear Suor marshes and Prey Thom 12 miles northeast of Phnom Penh. Cambodian forces said the clash, described as their fiercest yet, involved mortars cannons and rockets with hand to hand fighting and claims of 100 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong killed.

South Carolina senate announces an Atomic and Nuclear Energy Study Committee with five members. Richland County names Sen. Walter J Bristow and Sen. Hyman Rubin, while Sen. Gilbert E McMillan of Aiken criticizes the appointments. Other senators include Grimes of Georgetown Martin of Fairfield and Schumacher of Oconee.
