Senate Votes For $2.7 Billion Military Pay Raise

The Senate, by 51 to 27, approved a $2.7 billion servicemen pay raise, adding $1.7 billion via an Allott amendment after rejecting Nixon administration plans. Recruits would receive $301.50 monthly, up from $268.50 in the House version and $201.90 under the administration proposal.

West Point Graduate Vanishes Amid Desertion Concerns

Army reports 24 year old West Point graduate 1st Lt. John R Vequist of Pittsburgh Kan has been AWOL since May 20 and is believed possibly with his wife in Sweden after reportedly fleeing to Vietnam with an estimated 245 other soldiers in Germany. The Army may classify him as a deserter if he remains missing past 30 days.

Forest Fire May Benefit Superior National Forest

Whitney K. Lever, information officer, said a fire that burned over 10 000 acres in Superior National Forest north of Ely may have been beneficial. He noted much of the area should have burned under control before reseeding and that bug worms had killed much of the balsam. Federal crews had been burning to prepare seedbeds when the blaze, near Ely, escaped control on April 26.

The Consolidated School District of Aiken County presented a 1971 72 budget of 14 176 085 with no tax millage increase. Local 4 560 779 state 7 623 657 federal 1 991 649 fund operations and debt service 72 mills and 2 mills respectively. The district serves 24 986 students with 2022 employees across 26 elementary schools six junior high schools two middle schools seven high schools and special education vocational centers.

Aiken Seeks 1.6 Million Bond for Storm Drainage

Citizens for Progress moves toward a 1.6 million bond issue with a 500000 HUD grant approved for a 1.3 million storm drainage system. The plan covers 11 sections including Kalmia Hills downtown Hampton Ave and Crosland Park.
