Blast Rocks Machine Plant in Gastonia

A dynamite blast damaged the Petty Machine Co office area Monday night, blew out a wall and damaged three more at the Gastonia plant that makes machinery for textiles. A small charge, possibly one stick, caused the explosion three miles away. Authorities continued investigating the motive. President Larry Petty also chairs the Gaston County School Board.

The New York Stock Exchange started with a weaker tone as many issues moved fractionally. Kennecott fell to 34 with a percent drop, American Home rose to 78 percent, American Motors slipped to 6 percent, Control Data declined to 62.54, International Paper dipped to 37, and Crown Cork rose to 21.

Battle intensifies along DMZ as forces clash daily

US and South Vietnamese troops fight North Vietnamese units along the demilitarized zone for a third straight day. North Vietnamese rocket and small arms fire strike allied bases below the DMZ as air and artillery support tries to stem infiltration. Casualties reported include Americans killed and wounded. Vietnamese losses are cited with enemy weapons captured.

Toughen Up On Shoplifters Aiken Seminar Urges Merchants

Aiken merchants at a shoplifting seminar sponsored by the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce were urged to deter theft. The message highlighted a national loss of 3.65 billion dollars yearly and a 20 to 30 million dollar threat in the state, with local detector Max Meek noting nine arrests since the last term of court.

State Voter Books Purged in South Carolina

In a purge authorized by state law 189,456 registrants are struck from South Carolina voter lists for not voting in over two years. James B. Ellisor of the Election Commission notes many moved or died. The central computer system made the purge possible, reducing the 1968 10 year list to about 712,438.

Aiken County Removes 6 321 Voters From Registration

Aiken County purges 6 321, or 18 percent of 33 500 registered voters, for failing to vote in the past two years. Those removed will receive official letters. reinstatement requires a call to the local registration office at 648 8484 with social security and voter certificate numbers.

Jackson Seeks River Bridge With Georgia and SC Support

James Coodman of the Jackson Development Board told Aiken County lawmakers that Georgia is ready to proceed with a Savannah River bridge to Burke County while South Carolina officials delay. He blamed Barnwell County leaders led by Len Brown for blocking additional Savannah River crossings and cited a Brown letter to Sar dis mayor. Residents say the bridge west of Beech Island toward Augusta has been sought for over 25 years as Georgia completed a Waynesboro to Jackson center line survey.
