Aiken City Council plans to amend zoning rules Monday to classify satellite dish antennas as structures in front yards cites complaints. Also on agenda are revamping the 1983 84 budget per auditor guidance and promoting tourism funds via the Chamber of Commerce.

The Savannah River Plant plans to hire 1 070 more workers by year end 1985, lifting total employment from 12 180 in 1984 to 13 250. Construction at Du Pont and subcontractors adds most jobs, with 4 400 expected by 1985 year end.
At a Midland Valley forum six Democratic candidates debated tax incentives for new industry in Aiken County. The three debated were Seat 3 contenders Carl P. Cox LaVana McKenzie and Glenda Wilson with incumbent Mike McElhaney not seeking re election. They pressed for targeted tax breaks tied to local hiring and spending while urging efficiency in county spending and broader tax bases to fund services.
In South Carolina two Republicans Sen Strom Thurmond and Robert Cunningham battle two Democrats Rev Melvin Purvis and Cecil Williams in the June 12 primary. Winners advance to the November 6 general election facing Libertarian Stephen Davis. Thurmond, 81, touts a long public service career and pledges economic stability strong defense and state power.
