Change of venue for Tuesday Republican primary

Aiken County voters in Wagener Precinct 39 will cast ballots at A. L. Corbett Middle School due to Wagener Salley High School renovations. The lone Republican race is for County Council chairman with Ronnie Young, Tommy Knotts, and Philip Magee contesting. A public test of voting machines will be at 5 30 pm Friday at the County Council building for candidates, their representatives, and the public.

Aiken County Council approves land purchase at Lanley Pond

The Aiken County Council, by 7 votes to 2 with one abstention, approved buying 10 acres at Lanley Pond. Lombard Corp. partner Don Houck said the firm may donate the pond later. Opponents urged more recreational plans elsewhere and one member abstained due to lack of notice.

Carolina Bay Nature Reserve aims to stay natural

The Carolina Bay Nature Reserve near Price Avenue preserves a six to seven acre isolated wetland. Lee Dane of the Aiken County Open Land Trust notes the bay hosts unique flora and fauna not found in other bays and plans to donate the land to the city with a conservation easement after purchase. The project has started with a $60,000 city contribution and about $130,000 still owed.

Supreme Court to decide fate of video gambling ban case

The South Carolina Supreme Court will decide whether a July 1 blackout on video gambling can proceed. Westside Quick Shop Inc and Winner's Pot of Gold Hot Spot Inc claim the ban violates property rights and equal protection. The suit, filed in Greenville, seeks to keep the industry alive and asks the high court to assume jurisdiction.

Video poker parlor sues to collect IOU and fees

American Amusement of Aiken Inc. seeks more than 320000 from Rose Bass in a civil suit backed by a promissory note signed October 1997. Bass allegedly promised to repay 216761 dollars at 2400 per week from video game revenues at Main Event and Melrose I outlets. The state revenue department notes the corporate account was closed in August 1997 and could not identify company contacts.

Aiken County backs efforts to curb a tropical soda apple weed named solanum viarum Canal. Clemson Extension leads the local battle against a pest described as worse than kudzu, with a map showing counties Bamberg Beaufort Colleton Dorchester Edgefield Greenwood Jasper Saluda affected, and warnings that seeds move via hay and manure.
