CAPE CANAVERAL Florida AP A major rehearsal for the first space shuttle mission in 2% years tests hundreds of launch changes after the Challenger disaster Today's mock liftoff will run the final three hours of the countdown with mission control guiding a Houston based crew to an emergency landing at a launch site runway The exercise involves about 300 launch day team members from five NASA field centers contractor personnel rescue weather safety communications and other elements that will be in place Aug 31

Parachutist Dies At Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach AP reports 28 year old Marlon Wade Burford of Titusville Florida died after a parachute jump from the Palace Resort Hotel. Gusty winds drove him into a cement seawall. Steven Jester also from Titusville fled the scene after a separate impact near Landmark Best Western Resort. Witnesses saw the pair exit onto the beach with their parachutes.

Dukakis Poised for Nomination as Primaries End

Democrat Michael Dukakis heads into California New Jersey New Mexico and Montana primaries with a strong lead in delegates and a hopeful note that victory is in the air. Jesse Jackson calls his campaign a catalyst for growth while George Bush remains eager to face Dukakis in the fall. California polls show Dukakis ahead 61 to 30 in a ABC News survey of 415 interviews. turnout was forecast to be about 48 percent, the lowest in over four decades. Martin Marietta Promises SRP Jobs in Aiken Pitch

Martin Marietta president Caleb Hurtt pledged that if his firm wins the Savannah River Plant contract, it would recreate in Aiken many Wilmington Du Pont jobs.
