Is 100 calories per mile accurate for walking and running

USC Aiken researchers tested the common 100 calories per mile estimate by having adults walk or run one mile at self chosen speeds from 3 to 7 mph. They measured oxygen use to calculate calories burned finding 108 per mile overall with 115 while running and 98 while walking, all not significantly different from 100. Heavier individuals burned more calories, and results align with prior studies. The conclusion supports using 100 calories per mile as a reasonable estimate for fitness and weight loss guidance.
