US 3rd Infantry Division moves into central Iraq

The US military deployed over 1,500 combat troops into central Iraq, establishing headquarters at two air bases and a railroad station near Fallujah and Habaniyah. Two battalion sized task forces secured Fallujah while another took over airfields at Habaniyah, aiming to quell anti American demonstrations and support for Saddam Hussein's Baath Party. The 2nd Brigade of the division replaced the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment to patrol, partner with local leaders, and pursue community service projects at schools and hospitals.
