The IRS collected 135 million dollars by offsetting refunds of 248000 defaulters, mainly from student loans. About 50000 people protested or questioned the action, while the average offset was 544 dollars and one man lost 2613 dollars of his refund.
Washington reports state that more than 30 political prisoners were released in recent weeks with some early parole. Unconfirmed tips suggest as many as 1000 were freed this spring, though details on crime convictions remain unclear. Jacques Cousteau’s mediation is noted but unverified.

President Reagan convened more than 70 of the 100 Senate members at the White House to back his radical tax overhaul aimed at slicing the top personal rate to 27 percent and the corporate rate to 33 percent. The meeting aimed to rally support and deter amendments that would preserve certain tax breaks.
Design work is under way for a 50 million dollar chemical waste treatment facility at Savannah River Plant. The unit will convert radioactive effluent into a stable solid for burial and aims for 1988 completion with operation possible after approval by state health officials and Congress funding.
U S Senator Thurmond asked the Department of Energy to form an ad hoc panel to review Savannah River Plant safety and oversight. He proposed a report detailing panel findings and whether containment domes or NRC style oversight are needed, citing public concern after Chernobyl.
The Savannah River Plant annual report states radiation impact on nearby public health in 1985 was insignificant. It notes an added dose of 0.9 millirem at the SRP boundary, with about 70 percent from tritium and plutonium-239 rarely detected in tests.
The Aiken County School District approved 16 personnel changes after an executive session. Dr. Nancy Smith was named associate superintendent of Instruction and Kiam Gassman becomes at Aiken High School principal on July 1. Smith’s post to be filled by Troy Nobles. James O. Martin moves within Area 2.
