President Carter will host Senator Edward M. Kennedy for a private White House meeting. The session aims to ease tensions after campaign clashes, but Kennedy is not expected to back off his push to challenge Carter for the nomination.
Ayatollah Khomeini says President Carter is a roughneck and should be tried for trying to free the 53 Americans held in Tehran. The hostages reached day 215 in captivity as jailers insist they be tried as spies if the shah is not returned. Ramsey Clark pledges a U.S. commission to document American crimes against Iran at a Tehran conference led by Abolhassan Bani Sadr.
Israeli troops compelled Arab merchants to reopen shops amid a strike protesting terrorist attacks that paralyzed two West Bank mayors. An extremist who praised the terrorism claimed he was held briefly by police, a claim police denied.
President Carter vows to veto repeal of the 10 cent per gallon gas tax as Congress delivers decisive votes against him in both houses. A House 376 to 30 and a Senate 73 to 16 vote repeal the levy, with the measure likely reaching his desk before week’s end. Carter argues the fee is right for the country despite weak public support. The White House admits insufficient votes to sustain a veto if the bill passes.

Rev. Larry Gregory of Vaucluse United Methodist Church lies paralyzed from the mid chest down after a May 25 auto crash. He remains hopeful, expects to walk someday, and says prayer fuels his strength as his 100 member congregation prays and a medical fund is set up at Farmers and Merchants banks in Aiken County. He is a USC Aiken graduate and seminary student in Columbia.
