Therm-O-Disc Lays Off 24 Workers At Aiken Plant

The Aiken Therm-O-Disc plant will lay off about 24 employees this week per industrial relations manager Mike Holliman. Workers come from several plant areas with no timetable for recall. Therm-O-Disc makes thermostats and the layoff reflects the broader economic slowdown.

W R Grace Buys National Kaolin in Aiken

W R Grace & Co of New York buys National Kaolin Products of Aiken for 5.5 million in Grace common stock. The plant on U S 1 North and a 900 acre mining site are acquired to feed four Grace plants in the U S and Canada. Six million tons of clay will last 40 to 50 years.

Carter clinches Democratic delegates as Kennedy vows to continue

President Carter emerged with the Democratic delegate majority needed for renomination after eight primaries boosted him over the top. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy pledged to keep challenging, winning five of the final eight contests including California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Mexico and South Dakota. Carter won Ohio, Montana and West Virginia. Kennedy urged Democrats coast to coast to not concede the nominating race. Carter celebrated at a victory party, thanking supporters for turning a prior forecast of defeat into a “wondrous victory.”

Aiken County Debates Adult Book Store Ordinance Changes

The council considers a third form of the adult book store ordinance reducing the distance to a little over a quarter mile and restricting to minors. The measure passes first reading as renovations to the county jail proceed with bonds up to 2.475 million dollars for jail and law enforcement center projects and 270 thousand for sheriff department cars.

ACEA members pressed for legislation to raise millage for a 13 percent salary hike and major maintenance for Aiken County Schools. Rep Cain said time constraints prevent new bills before adjournment of the 1980 session. ACEA cites 7.4 mills as barely covering utility costs for 1980-81.
