Aiken's big box blues and city action plan

Cleanup options eyed for Savannah River high level waste

A National Research Council report urges continuing a planned research program to clean up about 30 million gallons of high level waste at the Savannah River Site. It compares three processing options and notes caustic side solvent extraction shows the fewest risks, with extensive testing recommended, while ion exchange carries the most risks.

Rainfall deficit lingers despite recent showers in CSRA

Meteorologist Bob Kurzeja reports the CSRA remains in a two and a half inch yearly rainfall deficit despite Sundays showers of about half an inch. Through May end, June totals barely exceed one and a half inches, leaving nearly four inches needed this month to ease the deficit. Daytime highs in the low 90s, with possible daily afternoon storms through Thursday.

North Augusta banners contest to showcase local art downtown

North Augusta introduces a 30 by 60 inch banner contest for 64 light poles along Georgia Avenue. 116 canvases will be displayed with 16 city logo banners and eight council insignia pieces. A $500 grand prize leads awards of $300 and $100. judging and a preview party occur before the September banner installation.

Fatal wreck probe continues in Aiken

The Friday truck crash on Highland Park Drive near Hayne Avenue left passenger John H Hanni ford IV dead at the scene from head trauma and driver Michael Andrew Summers charged with drunken driving after allegedly failing sobriety tests. Summit was eastbound in a 1985 Ford pickup when the wreck occurred around 11 p.m. per Aiken DPS report.
