Aiken County public high schools hold graduation ceremonies this evening with Ridge Spring Monetta and Aiken High at 6 p.m. and Silver Bluff Wagener Salley North Augusta Midland Valley and South Aiken at 8 p.m. Law enforcement assistance from multiple agencies will be on site amid recent campus attack incidents.
Yolanda Vinson, valedictorian of Midland Valley High School, is the third sibling in her family to earn the honor. She holds Palmetto Fellow and National Merit Scholar distinctions and received the Ray Kroc Leadership Award. Lawmakers failed to finish a 5.3 million state budget before the 5 p.m. deadline, despite a conference committee deal reached just before the hour. Negotiators worked long hours into Thursday and debated school construction, video gambling, and education funding as they prepare for a House vote.
North Aiken Elementary School marks its final day with students dismissed at 10 45 a m. as the campus ends its elementary tenure. Custodian Elizabeth Ryan, at the school since 1969, reflects on years of service and memories. Assistant secretary Mary Louise Gagnon notes the heavy task of archiving records ahead of move to a new building near Aiken Middle. Secretary Elaine Seigler, since 1979, agrees and prepares for retirement several weeks away.
