Methodists press for removal of Confederate Flag at Statehouse

South Carolina Methodists at their 23rd annual meeting reaffirmed a 1986 stance calling the Confederate Flag atop the Statehouse offensive to many residents. The resolution passed by voice vote with few oppositions. Separately, South Carolina Electric & Gas filed for a rate increase to fund a $450 million plant in Orangeburg County, awaiting regulators’ figures next month after two prior hikes.

Suit Alleges Jail Staff Ignored Pleas For Protection

An Aiken man files suit against the county claiming a racially motivated beating while in custody at the Hamp ton Avenue Detention Center after pleading for protection. Ira Dean Whitt, jailed for DUI on June 18 1994, says authorities ignored his pleas as a white man surrounded by Black inmates. He alleges officers failed to intervene allowing an assault by inmate Preston Johnson and left him untreated overnight until morning medical care.
