Two School Buses Collide in Salley, 14 Children Hospitalized

In Salley on Old Homestead Road two school buses collided head on as they traveled opposite directions. Sandra Jenkins Mayes, driving the bus with two special education students and an aide, was charged with driving on the wrong side of the road. Margaret Woods' bus carried 12 regular students and Woods was trapped but later stabilized at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.

Budget stalemate ends as lawmakers eye June return

Rep. Charles R. Sharpe and Rep. Tom Huff blamed Senate conferees for the Fiscal 1996 spending bill stalemate. The General Assembly plans four housekeeping days starting June 12 with hopes to pass the budget and approve vetoes.

SRS Picked as Interim Store for Spent Nuclear Fuel

Energy Secretary Hazel O Leary names Savannah River Site as one of three national sites to receive seven metric tons of spent nuclear fuel over 40 years. Idaho National Laboratory and Hanford near Richland were also chosen. SRS spokesman Rick Ford says the increase is minor and current storage already totals about 206 metric tons with a projected 213 tons after 40 years.

Afghan Gem Harvest Guides Collector to Aiken Display

Gem collector Gary Bowersox and his wife Bonita Chamberlain showcase a $85,000 Afghan aquamarine and other stones at Floyd and Greene Fine Jewelers in Aiken. They travel to Northeast Afghanistan via Pakistan to source gems, detailing tough journeys, cultural notes, and plans for their book Gemstones of Afghanistan due this July.
