Aiken County Ambulance Commission and Paramed plan a coordinated launch by July 1 with cooperation from agencies including the Sheriff’s Department Rescue Squad Hospital and funeral directors. They aim to deploy five ambulances quickly and discuss a countywide telephone call system at a meeting with Southern Bell.
Iraq halted oil shipments from Mediterranean terminals and moved to form a new company to run IPC assets after President Ahmed Hassan al Bakr announced the nationalization of the European American IPC. Foreign Minister travels to Moscow for talks as compensation plans are outlined.
A Missouri Pacific railroad tank car exploded in flames on Dallas East Side injuring at least 11 people and prompting evacuations of nearby homes.
U S forces bombed the Bao Giang 12 000 kilowatt power plant 25 miles northeast of Hanoi and damaged a bridge on the northeast rail line to China. The attack marked the first since resuming full scale bombing in April and targeted a major power source for war related industries in the Hanoi area.
Federal marshals escorted black militant H. Rap Brown to federal court in New Orleans near dawn to be resentenced for a federal gun control law conviction. Three cars of marshals backed the security operation.

Ford Motor Co the nations No 2 automaker awaited EPA decisions that could shut down its new car production lines in Washington.
Aiken County submitted engineering reports on its three sanitary landfills to the state Board of Health Solid Waste Management Division 30 days before a July 1 deadline requiring all open dumps to close. County engineer Authur Courtney delivered the documents to William Stilwell Jr. and expressed confidence the landfills will meet standards and avoid shutdown. One landfill is in Langley, another near the county stockade on Wire Road, and a third operates with Graniteville Co. on its property.
Charles Knowles of Salley filed for Senatorial Seat 3 challenging incumbent A L Dooley of Lexington County in the Democratic primary. Dooley filed earlier, with Republican W L Cooper also seeking Seat 3. Knowles, a construction worker with a teaching wife and three children, is largely unknown to county Democrats.
The region enjoys sunny mild weather with little rain expected this weekend. Temperatures range from mid 70s in Aiken to upper 80s elsewhere with overnight lows near 50s, light variable winds, and minimal rain chances. The National Weather Service notes readings cooler than normal over the past two days.
South Carolina Republicans claim equal footing with Democrats in nominating candidates for the June 27 primary. GOP Chairman Ken Powell calls it a great victory after the Legislature changed election laws granting Republicans until the primary date to name candidates by convention. Previously nominating by convention would have required by June 3.
At least five Crosland Park residents want their names dropped from a petition opposing a Columbia developer’s proposed apartment complex. Councilman Perry said signatures were gathered in May as part of a civic association effort to block rezoning of five acres at the park mouth. 444-plus signed. Final council approval pending zoning commission findings.
The Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce Finance Committee met after President Carl Littlejohn urged members to aid the chamber. Over $6,000 was raised and a subcommittee was formed to study other chambers and propose a fair, adequate funding structure to sustain the chamber's future. The board will consider the plan after a two week report. Executive Director Bryan McCanless and Littlejohn remain optimistic.
The 734th and last parking meter was removed in downtown Aiken leaving headless poles. City Council voted 21 months ago to deactivate meters and merchants praised free downtown parking. Money found in every meter so far may be counted next week. fate of meters unsure, possible sale to another city or repurposing. The poles will stay until council decides.
Stilwell told a meeting with county city and industrial representatives that no state certified open dumps exist in the county yet and all will be closed after July 1 under the state law. He warned that without approved plans from Salley compliance delays may trigger action and stressed the need for scheduled implementation and valid reasons for any variance.
