Stocks fell sharply in late trading on Friday but the month still closed higher overall. The Dow Jones average lost more than 200 points, helped by a bond rally as the 10 year yield slipped from 2.20 to 2.13 percent. The day opened with consumer spending down 0.2 percent in April, the first drop since last May.
Americans cut back in April as income barely rose and wages stalled. Commerce Department data show a 0.2 percent seasonally adjusted drop in consumer spending, with lower heating and gas prices offsetting some growth. Adjusted inflation rose 0.1 percent. taxes rose, and confidence edged higher in May.
