Memorial Day observance at Aiken Veterans Park honors fallen service members
Aiken residents gathered at the Aiken County Veterans Memorial Park for a wreath laying hosted by the James L. Hammons Marine Corps League. Commandant Ed Hammons urged attendees to support troops overseas as local veteran Tommy Day returned from the National Guard in the Middle East. Diane Day led hymns as Joshua Day played in the band, with names of those who died in World War I II Vietnam and Lebanon inscribed at the Richland Avenue site.

Last Civil War widow Alberta Martin dies at 97
Alberta Martin, the last widow of a Civil War veteran, died at age 97 in Enterprise Alabama. She passed away at a nursing home from complications of a heart attack suffered May 7. Her May December marriage in the 1920s to veteran William Jasper Martin and her longevity made her a noted symbol of Confederate memory.

Aiken County Sees No Memorial Day Weekend Fatalities
Ahead of the 100 deadliest travel days, Aiken County reports no Memorial Day weekend roadway fatalities for the first time in at least two years. Through February 2024, 17 roadway deaths occurred, with most victims young and ejected in single vehicle crashes. February was the deadliest month with six deaths and only one belt use.
