A sunken 16th century Portuguese ship in the Straits of Malacca reportedly holds about 3 billion dollars in gold and precious stones. The Flor De La Mar, once Portuguese navy flagship, sank after hitting a reef in January 1512. officials say salvage talks occurred but identities and exact location were withheld.

South Carolina operates 28 prisons with six maximum and 20 minimum security facilities. The system housed 10,910 inmates in fiscal year 1987, and two new facilities are under construction to open in 1989, haltingly noted by Hal Leslie. South Carolina spends far less on corrections than neighboring North Carolina and Georgia.
A federal judge approves a consent decree requiring DOE to clean up three hazardous waste areas at Savannah River Plant under RCRA. Sites include a metallurgical lab basin, four acid waste basins, and a mixed hazardous radioactive facility. TNX basin is excluded but will stop wastewater inflow and get treatment.
The Commerce Department reports the Index of Leading Indicators rose 0.2 percent in April, marking a third straight monthly gain and bolstering expectations of a steady expansion. Improvements across five indicators, led by longer average workweeks, offset declines in four others as analysts foresee a strong year for GNP.
