Fort Lauderdale report says the Grant Thornton firm will compensate 17 local governments for 105 million in losses tied to the collapse of ESM Government Securities Inc. The firm’s settlement follows the SEC shutdown of ESM in 1985 after its founder Ronnie E. Eaton faced public scrutiny and Jose Gomez pleaded guilty to falsifying audits.
A Moscow market veal sample analyzed in France registered radiation six to ten times above European safety limits. Diplomatic sources said embassies advised their nationals to avoid Soviet veal and pork for now due to higher radioactivity in those meats.
Washington AP report says the Communications Workers of America ordered 155,000 AT&T employees to walk off the job at 12:01 a.m. Sunday after failed last-ditch talks on a new three year contract.

A tour bus taking 40 passengers from a Nevada gambling junket to Santa Monica overturned up to three times on a winding mountain highway near Walker. Nineteen elderly people died and many survivors were seriously injured as authorities investigated whether speeding caused the crash. The bus left a 300 to 400 foot skid mark before ending in the river.
