FBI Director-designate Robert Mueller moves toward confirmation as chief of the bureau. Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy says there is no question Mueller will be confirmed.
Many troubled Greenville schools labeled unsatisfactory on statewide report cards will be tiered, receiving only the worst performing schools the promised financial and technical help. The Education Accountability Act of 1998 aimed to aid such schools with money and professional assistance.
Death notices list Dewey E. Stewart of New Ellenton and Anthony J. Monaco of Aiken in the obituary column on page 5A. The notices briefly acknowledge their passing and identify their towns of residence.
Aiken Planning Commission weighs granting water and sewer to a proposed three story 100 room Gene Fleischer property hotel and 12,000 square foot conference center south of the city. Fleischer says an agreement to provide sewer was made in 1990 and a line was installed at his expense.

Savannah River Site spokesman says radioactive waste from a leaking tank was moved to a new container. Westinghouse SRP contractor Dean Campbell reports about 250000 gallons involved with about 15 pinpoint leaks found. A monitoring system had detected four gallons leaking previously but none reached ground due to an annulus catch basin. Repairs did not suffice, so waste was piped to another tank.
Ridge Link of Outback Steakhouse confirms construction underway at Aiken Mall for a new Aussie style steakhouse. The opening date is projected for October 23 with a local management team to hire 90 to 95 employees in mid September as the restaurant prepares to join the community.
