Clemson University trustees approve a 41 dollar semester increase for state residents, raising annual tuition to 8086 dollars as the 341.5 million budget grows 2.5 percent.

The Aiken County Board of Education will privately discuss acquiring property at Kalmia Plaza Tuesday. The meeting starts 5:30 p.m. with an executive session vote, a plaza tour, then return to open session at 7 p.m. at the Education Center. Bill Cullum has discussed lease-purchasing the Belk building on Richland Avenue.
At a July board meeting Dr. John B. Bradley reported a seven to one consensus to buy the property with one absent. No action on moving offices yet though votes may occur this Tuesday. Cost estimates ranged from 50 000 to over 1.2 million with a plan to rent unused space at Kalmia Plaza to bolster the school budget. Paul Hyer of Concerned Parents of Area 2 organized petitions and a press conference opposing the move.
In the Third Congressional District a seven-candidate field forms as retirement of Democratic Rep. Butler Derrick opens a House seat. Among contenders are Republican Bob Cantrell with a self‑appointed contract pledge, Ed Allgood Lindsey Graham and Democrats Tommy Moore Jim Bryan Debbie Dorn Pracht and Lou Bracknell.
Thousands crowded Smith Hazel Recreation Center Park for a festival started by Betty Gyles seven years ago. Crafters vendors and food stands filled the park while teens gathered around a music stage and younger children swam for relief from the heat. Sponsors included City of Aiken Parks and Recreation, Foxie 103 JAMZ, Smith Hazel Youth Club and local safety department.
Carl Langley reports that the state lottery question remains absent from the ballot while Democrats and Republicans test four key issues. Democrats pose a health care question on Aug 9 about heart surgery at Aiken Regional Medical Center. Republicans add health care plus three hot issues: term limits, Confederate flag, and eliminating property taxes.
