Peach Harvest Better This Year in South Carolina

South Carolina growers report an earlier harvest ending one to three weeks ahead of schedule thanks to rain and warmth, and feel the season is better than last year’s drought. Ed Edmund Taylor of Clemson Extension notes some excess rain but compares favorably to the previous drought. Officials say early fruit typically comes from coastal and Ridge areas around Lexington and Aiken counties, impacted by a dry spring and late cold weather.

Leak Repair Shuts Down Nuclear Plant

SENECA AP One of three Oconee Nuclear Station reactor units has been shut down to repair a leak of radioactive coolant. The leak is not a public health threat and there is no likely release of radioactive material. The No 2 unit, capable of 849 million watts, began Wednesday and completed Thursday. About six gallons per hour leaked inside the shell of a steam generator.

Deaths Margaret N. Sullivan Savannah Ga

Margaret N. Sullivan of Savannah Georgia died recently. Services were held at a local church with burial in Bonaventure Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her obituary appears on page 8A.

Solicitor Shaw Will Plead Guilty in Federal Court

Former New Ellenton mayor Randy W. Shaw is set to plead guilty Monday in Raleigh North Carolina federal court to charges related to the town's controversial 5.025 million sewer system. Solicitor Barbara Morgan said the plea is anticipated and sentencing will be delayed for a pre sentence report.

Gloverville Man Gets Life For Murder And Arson

Kenneth L. Moyer, 24, of Gloverville, was found guilty of murder and arson in the January death of 70 year old Idell Barton. He received life for murder and one year for arson at the Aiken County Judicial Center. The jury deliberated 45 minutes after a four day trial.

Trucks Pelted On I-20 Injures Driver In Aiken County

Five trucks were struck by unknown projectiles on Interstate 20 near the 25 mile marker around 2 a.m. A Grover North Carolina driver, James Young, 49, was injured when his truck was hit he fell while inspecting damage and lost a finger. He was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers and then to the Medical College of Georgia. The incident remains under investigation by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.

Rwanda to Get U S Aid and Troop Deployment

President Clinton ordered 200 U S troops to Kigali to secure the airport for relief flights as part of a broader U S effort to aid Rwandan refugees. He also requested Congress approve 820 million dollars for refugee assistance. Deputy Defense Secretary Deutch said nearly half the troops will handle security duties.

Stone and Huff clash in busy South Carolina House race

Rep. Charles H. Stone, calling himself the Solid Rock, accuses gerrymandering of moving him from District 82 to Huff’s District 83. The primary features a Huff Stone duel in District 83 with no Democrat opposition in November, while Mason and Kling contest District 81 for a spot against Irene Rudnick. Other races include Sharpe, Clyburn, Williams, Smith, and Henderson.
