Blue Ribbon Commission urges new approach to nuclear waste storage
The Blue Ribbon Commission on America s Nuclear Future warns that delaying a solution to the nations nuclear waste problem will raise costs and controversy. It calls for one or more geologic disposal facilities and consolidated interim storage, plus U.S. leadership in international safety and nonproliferation efforts. The draft urges a Congressionally chartered federal corporation to oversee the program and notes public sessions across communities including Augusta. It cites tens of thousands of tons of spent fuel at more than 70 plants with no permanent disposal path and mentions Savannah River Site and Hanford as major locations. It acknowledges budget and energy cost pressures and says revenue streams exist to fund the plan, while warning legislative action will be required for many recommendations. The interim report was released by DOE Acting Press Secretary Damien LaVera, with final decisions pending the BBC report due January 29 2012 and public comments through October 31.

Long arm quilting workshop teaches tips at museum
Karen Kendo led 15 quilters at the Aiken County Historical Museum in a long arm quilting workshop. The event included hands on instruction, demonstrations by The Quilting Solution team, and an open house from 10 a.m. to noon at 433 Newberry St. S.W. The program features Sidesaddle and Beyond the Basic Meander as classes, with registration only sessions to follow.
