South Carolina sees fewer DV dismissals after AG order
In spring 2001 prosecutors and judges dropped about half of the most serious domestic violence cases. A year after Attorney General Charlie Condon ordered prosecutors to stop dismissing charges the dismissal rate fell to about one third and convictions rose to 48 percent from 34 percent. Condon said the aim is to curb harm to women and children and improve the criminal justice system.

Presidential visit helps Sanford's money gap
Charleston. Gov. Mark Sanford said President George W. Bush’s appearance at a campaign fundraiser narrowed the fundraising gap with Gov. Jim Hodges. Bush spoke to about 2,500 at a luncheon in North Charleston and later to around 1,000 at the luncheon, urging support for Sanford. Sanford trails Hodges by roughly nine to one in funds, with Hodges about $4.3 million to Sanford’s $500,000. Bush’s third SC stop since December followed a hard primary. Protests and praise accompanied the event as Sanford vowed to stay competitive.

Court clears execution waiver by Myrtle Beach man
The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled Myrtle Beach resident Michael Passaro is competent to waive all appeals and face execution for killing his 2 year old daughter in 1998 to harm his estranged wife. If he does not appeal within 15 days, an execution date will be set. Passaro expressed desire to die, saying he cannot live with the consequences while prosecutors called him evil. The court noted some inmates waive appeals, and Passaro had previously told officials he preferred death over further legal action.
