President Reagan announced the United States will explore a one-year extension of the existing grain sales agreement with the Soviet Union and potential additional grain sales. He ruled out a new long-term deal for now, citing ongoing repression in Poland and the Soviet crackdown.
In Zimbabwe the government denied troops found the hostages bodies amid an eight day search for six tourists kidnapped by guerrillas. A spokesman said a village led to possible evidence but could not locate graves as the hunt continued across Matabeleland with 2000 police and soldiers including planes and armored units. Lookout Masuku and Dumiso Dabengwa appeared in court as authorities press for release of two former aides of opposition leader Joshua Nkomo.

Hani el Hassan says the PLO agreed to leave Beirut weeks ago. asks if Israel will withdraw toward the south.
Washington AP report notes the Reagan administration forecasts a notable 1982 economic upturn and a 1983 budget deficit of 115 billion dollars. Officials acknowledge the mid year forecast blends political aims with Congress approved projections, as 1982 deficit tops 100 billion dollars.
The House approves a $175.3 billion defense authorization for fiscal 1983 with a 1 percent across the board cut. The measure supports Pentagon weapons, operations, and maintenance and faces conference talks with the Senate version at $177.9 billion.
