Rainbow wave of openly LGBTQ athletes at Tokyo Olympics gains momentum
A growing tide of openly gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer athletes marks Tokyo, with Outsports counting 168 publicly out competitors. The rise contrasts with London 2012 when only 23 openly LGBTQ athletes were recorded, signaling broader acceptance across sports and society. Daley, Britain’s diving champion, highlights personal pride and chosen family support as he advocates for younger LGBTQ athletes. Finnish swimmer Ari-Pekka Liukkonen notes continued challenges in coming out within swimming.
