The Aiken County Board of Education votes to raise operating and debt service millage rates by 5.5 and 0.4 mills respectively to cover a 567 164 shortfall tied to tax digest drops and land use reassessment. A 1 375 000 bond sale is approved, and new principals and coordinators are named.
Prime Minister Begin says U S envoy Habib must secure unequivocal PLO departure from Beirut within two days. Israeli leaders expect Syria Jordan and Egypt to absorb guerrillas while Israel warns of renewed assault if PLO refuses to leave. Habib reports progress but doubt remains over full withdrawal and regional asylum plans.
Halocarbon Vice President Louis Fesnais recalled shoveling dirt in South Carolina when he was a recruit at Camp Croft in Spartanburg. At an Aiken County Council meeting, Carrol H. Warner quipped about balancing children and money, while Dave Derrick dismissed being labeled an expert, saying he is not 50 miles from home.

Strom Thurmond’s request to speed completion of the facility turning liquid high level waste into a solid glass form for safer storage and eventual disposal. The Navy fuel materials facility got 45 million, with a 175 million total cost and about 300 jobs at SRP, plus a no significant impact finding from DOE for construction and operation.
