USC Aiken’s Saturday Academy receives a $191,254 AmeriCorps grant as one of 16 South Carolina programs funded to provide reading and writing tutoring to middle school students performing below standard. The award supports group instruction and individual tutoring by AmeriCorps members and was praised by USC Aiken leaders for modeling national literacy work.
Ju л io Ocampo Vargas, 29, charged with first degree assault and battery, conspiracy to kidnap, and weapon possesion, did not attend the trial opening prompting Judge Doyet Early III to issue an active bench warrant. The 2015 incident on Windsor Road involved a knife threat and a struggle, with the victim escaping after striking the suspect with a Taser. Police later identified Vargas and he was briefly jailed on bond before release.
Adam Poore of Aiken won the 156 pound division at the WAKO North American Kickboxing Championship in Las Vegas on July 9 10, dominating his opponents three to one and scoring with a Superman punch and a spinning hook kick. The victory advances Poore as a USA Team member aiming at PAN AM games in October and possibly World Games in Poland in 2017. Poore trains at Greubels MMA in Augusta and plans to turn pro this year.
