Race to raise the Hunley underway with round the clock shifts

Charleston reports that 12 hour shifts began as divers archaeologists and engineers install pilings and a protective truss around the Confederate submarine Hunley off Sullivans Island. A crane arrived ending a month of delay as slings and inflatables prepare for a surface lift possibly by August 3 before hurricane season peaks.

Former Hilton Head Prep teacher jailed for sexual conduct

William Usher, 53, a former teacher and coach at Hilton Head Preparatory School, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to second degree criminal sexual conduct for having sex with a 14 year old female student. He admitted guilt and apologized to the victim, and will register as a sex offender. The plea avoided a potential 20 year sentence and followed his admission that the accusation was false. The victim’s mother urged vigilance to protect South Carolina from sexual predation.
