Posner Completes Graniteville Takeover

The Graniteville Company merged with Victor Posner’s Southeastern Public Service Company after a 1982 campaign beginning January 5 with a $11 per share purchase for 206000 Graniteville shares. Posner increased holdings, forced executives to accept a golden parachute, and closed the Warren Division costing 500 jobs as talks of a buyout continued. Southeastern stock remains publicly traded while Graniteville ceases to be listed.

South Carolina June unemployment hits four-year low 6.7 percent

The state reports a 6.7 percent jobless rate for June, down 0.4 points from May and the first sub 7 percent reading since May 1980. Aiken County shows 7.6 percent, with officials predicting further declines into July and a year end range of 6 to 7 percent.

Genetic mutations identified for beta thalassemia diagnosis

Researchers identify about 30 mutations linked to beta thalassemia, enabling prenatal diagnosis via amniocentesis. The inherited disease can require monthly transfusions and can be fatal by age 25. symptoms include jaundice and enlarged spleens.

Satellite Dish Appeals Denied For 2 In City

The Aiken Zoning Board of Adjustments denied two requests for variances to keep satellite antenna dishes in front yards. Owners Larry Lowe and Roy Cole sought front yard placements but the council had defined dishes as auxiliary structures and prohibited them there. The board’s three members rejected the petitions. appeals proceed to enforcement actions if noncompliance occurs.
