A Texas prison official said negotiations with seven armed convicts holding 11 hostages at Huntsville State Prison could end today. Spokesman Ron Taylor said he did not expect the siege to continue beyond the day as telephone talks with the inmates, who seized the education building Wednesday afternoon, paused for a second night.
A federal jury in California found A&P Stores contracted with other chains to fix beef prices from 1964 to 1973. Seven cattle growers in California and Colorado receive 32.7 million dollars in damages after the antitrust verdict. Other chains named as coconspirators were not defendants.
Presidential attorney James D. St. Clair said it would be impossible to surrender 64 Watergate conversations within 10 days as Jaworski proposed. Sirica urged simplicity and offered to set a timetable himself if the parties cannot agree.
The NAACP says it will return to court to pursue a cross district integration plan for Detroit area schools after the Supreme Court's 5 to 4 ruling striking down a cross district busing plan involving Detroit and 52 suburban districts. The court sent the case back to the U S District Court to craft a Detroit centric desegregation plan and warned the ruling could affect similar plans nationwide.
Premier Alexei Kosygin and President Nikolai Podgorny were unanimously re-elected for four years at a joint Supreme Soviet session. They were nominated by Brezhnev, part of the Kremlin leadership trio since Khrushchev's ouster. Brezhnev’s own six year term ends at the party congress in 1975 or early 1976.
PORTLAND Ore AP the state medical examiner blamed a synthetic experimental narcotic called allylprodine for the deaths of three young people in the Portland area within the past week. Dr William Brady said the drug circulating locally may have been made in a nonregistered laboratory. The drug known as China white also hospitalized five others and was 95 percent pure.
The local forecast notes 50 percent rain today and Saturday with 30 percent tonight. Sunshine is expected to push temperatures toward the upper 80s. Winds are light and variable, mainly southwest. The Sizzler Contest, sponsored by Farmers and Merchants Bank and the Aiken Standard, continues with contestants predicting when the thermometer hits 100 degrees.

In a pre debate interview Bryan Dorn said rural voters in his 3rd Congressional District could push him to win the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. He predicted carrying Spartanburg and Richland counties, doubting Greenville, while Ravenel led in Charleston and tied or led in other areas.
Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Charles Ravenel told about 40 Black supporters that he would appoint Blacks to at least 30 percent of state government posts including high offices. He argued 30 percent aligns with the population and said he owes nothing to the current political system. The meeting occurred in a funeral home, and Black voters backed Ravenel in the July 30 runoff against W. J. Bryan Dorn. Ravenel opposes capital punishment and hopes it never becomes law in South Carolina.
The House Judiciary Committee Democrats sharpened the proposed articles of impeachment against President Nixon in a closed caucus. The session delayed the public vote as members debated wording and prepared to move toward impeachment and a Senate trial. Chairman Peter W. Rodino Jr. urged that the President must be found wanting after hours of debate.
Ronald A. LaCouture, former Aiken County administrator, is retained by the Jackson Town Council at 25 dollars an hour plus expenses for an indefinite period. Mayor Jarrell M. Brown says LaCouture will devote his time to town management, guiding a goals program and a centralized accounting and reporting system.
Five Aiken County volunteer departments met with the Board of Commissioners Legislative Committee to reassure them the county will not seize control. A study was approved to form an Emergency Services Department including Central Communications Civil Defense ambulance and volunteer fire units with potential subsidies for services under contract. A council from each unit may distribute funds while a pilot subsidy of 150 to 200 dollars monthly was discussed.
McCormick County Sheriff J.P. Gable brought Calvin Morri son and David Morrison back from Portland to face murder charges in the deaths of three Ft. Gordon soldiers. The brothers are held in Greenwood County jail for extra precautions amid unconfirmed threats. Court dates and defense plans were discussed, with a McCormick County trial likely in the second week of October.
The House Judiciary Committee nears a majority for impeachment as debate continues over charging Nixon with obstruction of justice in the Watergate cover-up. Rodino warns the burden of a decision will last for all time while Latta predicts a 27 to 11 vote in favor and a Senate trial.
