The Supreme Court, in an 8 to 0 decision, rules Nixon must surrender White House tapes and papers linked to the Watergate cover-up. Chief Justice Burger writes that executive privilege cannot override due process in criminal justice. The decision leaves the Detroit busing case unresolved.
The FAA said an Argentine jet reported hijacked landed safely at Kennedy Airport at 9 22 a m and appeared not to have been commandeered. No further details were released as the investigation continues.
The FCC opens three days of hearings on prohibiting joint ownership of newspapers and television stations in the same city. The plan also considers cross ownership with radio, potentially forcing 231 daily papers to divest broadcasting holdings within five years.
Piedmont Airlines, after winter layoffs and route consolidation due to fuel shortages, reported net income of 3,567,977 for the second quarter of 1974, up from 2,592,400 a year earlier. Primary earnings per share were 1.45 versus 1.06.
The NLRB asks a federal court in Covington to bar the United Mine Workers from threatening or coercing miners at the Highsplint mine in Harlan County. A hearing was set on the NLRB petition alleging unfair labor practices during picketing. SLU and UMW picketed Eastover Mining Co, halting production as two miners were fired for alleged UMW involvement last week.
President Nixon concentrates on the economy and calls a meeting with Secretary James T. Lynn to address the housing slump. Kenneth R. Cole Jr and Kenneth Bush attend, as Greenspan is nominated to chair the Council of Economic Advisers, succeeding Herbert Stein who leaves Sept 1 for a teaching post.
The County Board of Registration reports a flood of calls about the Democratic primary runoff and reminds residents it is too late to vote if not registered in June and that cross party voting is not allowed. Aiken citizens appeal the certificate of need for the Hospital Corporation of America. A public hearing is set for August 6 at 3 p.m. in the Aycock Building before the State Board of Health and Environmental Control. The filing party includes Robert A Brooks Dr Robert L Lipe Mildred Karraker and Rev Lawson Shepherd of Jackson.
The Aiken County magisterial system reduced rural magistrates' salaries while two members, Lester L. Chitty and Quimby A. Wise, received increases to 7500. New pay levels put them near full time officials, with several other magistrates’ salaries cut or eliminated.
Aiken County Board of Commissioners approved a $307 348 95 revenue sharing budget and a study to determine feasibility of an Emergency Services Department. Funding includes indigent care of 150 000 and Helping Hands 12 000. A move to shift ambulance services under the county administrator was noted. An ordinance raising Sheriff Department service charges was approved.
